It was softer and lighter than it should have been. Not with all those memories tied up in such a small item.
Lee let a finger linger on its smooth, cold surface for a moment longer. Then she stood and jammed her hands into her pockets. The little coin winking back up at her from the tombstone.
“I know it wasn’t all hardship, dad.–”
She tried again.
“You always had the perfect jest–”
The words lodged in her throat.
“Anyway. I– I figured you should keep this one. It came up heads.”
With the rain pounding down overhead… it seemed fitting that today’s short story would be a little morose. Hopefully, the ending landed that bittersweet note I was aiming for. What did you think?
